Street parties
March 11, 2022Thinking of a street party for the Jubilee? Please let us know!
In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, making her the first British monarch in history to celebrate 70 years on the throne. The occasion will be celebrated throughout the UK with extra bank holidays and street parties in June.
The EDP printed an article with essential guidance on How to Hold a Platinum Jubilee Street Party
Anyone who wants to hold a street party is welcome to do so any time during the bank holiday weekend, from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June.
While it’s helpful if one person takes charge, the idea behind a street party is that the whole road is involved in the planning and organising, and it brings the community together.
How do you plan a street party?
The basics:
- It is legal for anyone to hold a street party from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June
- Start planning six weeks in advance
- If you need to close the road to traffic, you will normally need to apply 5 to 12 weeks in advance for permission from Norfolk Council to temporarily close the road. Apply here: https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/business/licences-and-permits/highways-licences-and-permits
- If you need Temporary Events Notice for loud music and/or to sell alcohol , see: https://www.breckland.gov.uk/article/9992/What-is-a-Temporary-Event-Notice-TEN
- Consider Platinum Jubilee Street Meet for smaller events or to avoid road closure
- Once application approved, organise menus, seats and tables or picnic rugs and decorations or games! Hopefully you have involved all residents of the street in your planning.
- The government suggests you start party planning at least six weeks in advance by filling out an application form on your local council website. This gives them time to put a temporary traffic regulation in place and close your road to traffic so you can take advantage of the whole street.
The Street Party website has loads of advice, checklists and a free residents’ guide on how to organise an official Jubilee street party.
Or take your street party off the street and on to the grass – get the children involved and make it a Teddy Bear’s (and their owners) picnic. Find ideas for games here: https://www.great-picnic-ideas.com/fun-party-games.html
