Team 191 make spectacular garden renovation

Prince’s Trust Team 191 has carried out an amazing Garden Rescue style transformation in the grounds of Sanford House Nursing Home in Dereham.

Their work on the garden renovation at the local nursing and dementia residential care home is just one part of the story. The garden project is part of a free, 12-week personal development programme for 16-to-25-year olds who are not in full-time education, employment or training. The programme includes a qualification and aims to develop skills, build confidence, make friends and look ahead to a future in education or work.

The team of eight young people have spent a few weeks planning, sourcing items for the garden, collecting materials kindly donated by supportive local businesses, fund-raising at the local Tesco Extra store packing customers’ bags and much more.

Working with the Wellbeing Nursing Team at Sanford House, the team designed a safe and stimulating garden which allows residents to get full benefit from being outside. To allow each member of the team to develop leadership skills, they took it in turns to be the Team Leader for the day to encourage confidence in their abilities.

Town Mayor, Councillor Hugh King, attended with his Deputy, Councillor Linda Monument, and praised Team 191 for their work. He said, “They’ve all worked incredibly hard from start to finish, raising over £1,200 to equip the garden. They created sensory and music boards, laid new paving, made raised wooden planters and redecorated the gazebo. All this under the leadership of Chantelle Williams, Scott Rudling and Gary Szabo from the Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service – so I’d like to thank them too.”

Everybody present, residents, nurses and managers from Sanford House, members of aboutDereham, Callie Skelton Tesco’s Community Champion and friends and family gave the team numerous rounds of applause for all they’d done to make the garden a safer and more appealing place to be.
