Join us on 2nd June to light the beacon on Fleece Meadow

There’s a long and unbroken tradition for celebrating Royal Jubilees, Weddings and Coronations with the lighting of beacons – Dereham will be joining thousands of other communities across the world in lighting a Beacon on Fleece Meadow on the evening of 2nd June 2022 to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The country will celebrate yet another unique Royal milestone, Her Majesty the Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth. More than 2,000 beacons will be lit throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas territories together with each Commonwealth capital city in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless service.  This includes an event organised and hosted by Dereham Town Council on Fleece Meadow, behind the Memorial Hall in Dereham. The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm, the same time as all the beacons across the UK.

Come along from 7.30pm to enjoy free live music and a children’s entertainer.  Hot dogs or burgers and soft drinks and ice creams will be on sale all evening. Bring along a rug or folding chair and spend an enjoyable evening with friends on the Fleece Meadow as we wait for dusk and the lighting ceremony.  Parking is freely available on Cowper Road car park.  However, if using Morrison’s car park, please be aware of their 3 hour parking restriction.

Councillor Hugh King, the new Mayor of Dereham, commented on the planned festivities:  “I’m very proud to say that thanks to grant funding and Dereham Town Council our community will be part of this auspicious occasion along with many thousands of others around the world.  I hope to see lots of people come and join in the evening’s entertainment and stay for the lighting ceremony itself.  These milestones are few and far between and it’s an honour for us all to take part in them.”
