Heritage Open Days in Dereham

Heritage Open Days, or HODs, for shorthand, take place every year in September with the primary aim of celebrating and bringing to our attention some of the fantastic heritage that exists across the country. See: https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/

In Dereham we are surrounded by our history and heritage, but it is not always well known or accessible. In 2022, two organisations ran events specially designed for HODs. These were Bishop Bonner’s Cottage Museum and a series of town walks designed jointly by Dereham Heritage Trust and Walkers are Welcome.

All proved extremely popular and attracted many participants. The heritage walks covered aspects of the town’s history, including opening up the explosives store, a Georgian Dereham trail and an Industrial Heritage walk. These were guided walks with explanations about the points of interest and an accompanying booklet.

We think there is scope to put on more events for Heritage Open Days in 2023 which will be from 8th – 17th September. Plans need to be ready by May 2023 so as to go on the HODs website and in their print brochures. If we start planning in early 2023, organisations can schedule their opening times so visitoras can go from one to the other.
