Volunteer

Anyone can volunteer. It can be very rewarding and is a great way to:
  • meet new people
  • gain new or use existing skills
  • get experience
  • make a big difference to your community
Volunteering makes you feel good; it makes the most of your talents; helps you learn new skills; builds confidence; looks good on your CV and can lead to new friendships.

aboutDereham Partnership
Volunteer Gardener

Would you like a small patch of land where you can grow your own veg or flowers? Gardening is very beneficial for both physical and mental wellbeing. This is a great opportunity to help an elderly resident by managing the garden for her - with the added opportunity to grow your own plants. Contact us to talk about this opportunity

St Withburga Ringers

Handbell ringers create the most magical sound. It is fun, creative, friendly and aids wellbeing.

This Dereham-based handbell group are looking for new players to join us. You do not need to be able to read music or have any previous experience. We entertain at care homes, WIs etc, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, but mainly play just for our own enjoyment.

We meet on Monday afternoons 2-3.15pm at Trinity Methodist Church, Theatre Street, Dereham and pay a weekly subscription of £3.

Please contact Sylvia for further information.

Friends of Dereham Memorial Hall
Lend a hand for Dereham Day 2024

The second Dereham Day was a huge success! More than 70 local groups took part to share their activities with upwards of 5000 residents and visitors in the Memorial Hall and on Fleece Meadow. We’d like to expand our organising group to get Dereham Day 2024 ready, and to put some of our great new ideas into being. It’s not a lot of work or very time-consuming, and it’s great fun. If you join us you’d be doing something really worthwhile in the community. Saturday 11th May is the date for DD24. We meet up about once a month to plan and check on our progress. If you’d like to help out, call Tim on 696900 or 07432091044 to find out more.

Would you like to be our next treasurer?

Here is an opportunity to help aboutDereham in its work. We need someone to look after the money - keep a list of transactions and keep an eye on the bank. We have very few transactions so this is not a demanding role and could offer valuable experience for the right person. It's also a great opportunity to talk to our members and make sure they are making good use of their membership.

Do you have any strong carrier bags?

At the Mid Norfolk Food Bank, based in Dereham next to Wellspring Church, we are facing increasing demand every day. We are very short of strong carrier bags - the ones that are sometimes called A Bag For Life, as these can be used more than once. Plastic bags are generally better than paper bags as they last longer. You can donate bags at the food bank or when you are doing your usual shop at one of several locations in town. See the website link below for drop-off points.

Can you be our next social media manager?

Several community groups would like to post about their activities on social media – but they are too busy running their events to do it for themselves.

If you know your way round Facebook would you like to be a social media manager for local groups? This would be a voluntary role and could mean that you log in to Facebook once a week in order to post news and photographs.

If you have an interest in online communication, you may be able to help with websites or newsletters or setting up a Twitter account. This is a very flexible role that you can do from home in your free time.

Dereham Windmill Charity
Windmill Trustee

Would you like to become a Trustee?
We are a registered charity and are looking for more members of the community to join us. This is a volunteer role and you don't need to have had any experience of being a trustee. All you need is commitment to help keep our Grade 2 listed windmill and Exhibition Centre open and running efficiently.
Trustees meet one evening a month to plan the future of the mill and to help raise much needed restoration funds.
If you can spare a few hours a month to support our charity, please email us. We would love to hear from you.

We are looking for a few more Windmill Guides and other Volunteers to join our friendly team.
We can only keep our Grade 2 listed windmill open to the public with your help. Being a Windmill Guide is our most important role, guides look after visitors to the mill. Most guides base themselves on the ground floor and allow visitors to explore the mill and exhibitions at their own pace. We hope Guides will be available for one morning or afternoon each month, but our rota is very flexible. Volunteers are also needed to help throughout the year, especially our Teddy Bear Zip Wire and Christmas events.
We open every Friday and Saturday between March and December 10 till 3.
If you can spare a few hours a month to help Dereham Windmill Charity, please contact us. We would love to hear from you.
