In a special promotion for 2020 Norwich Jazz Club is pleased to announce that Gaz Hughes' amazing homage to Art Blakey will be featured at Dereham Memorial Hall on Saturday 21st March as part of their 5-month UK tour.

With a frontline section comprising club favourites Alan Barnes (saxes), Bruce Adams (trumpet) and Dean Masser (tenor) the band also features Andrzej Baranek (piano), Ed Harrison (bass) and in the role of Art Blakey, the band leader himself Gaz Hughes (drums).

The Jazz Messengers is a brand synonymous with Art Blakey which stretches back to the late '40s. It has produced nearly 70 albums (many on the legendary Blue Note label) and featured an impressive roll call of performers and composers, including the likes of Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Timmons, Cedar Walton and Keith Jarrett (though there have been many, many more!) For their new album and tour Gaz and the guys have hand-picked some of the Jazz Messengers most well-loved repertoire (including tunes by Bobby Watson, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Curtis Fuller) and their sound is every bit as fat and hard-swinging as you’d expect.
